Chiropractic Adjustment

Most people know that the majority of chiropractic treatments are made up of gentle spinal ‘adjustments’ or ‘manipulations.’ Through these adjustments, chiropractors can improve your body’s natural alignment, movement and posture. But, how do chiropractic adjustments work, and why are they important?

What Is a Spinal Adjustment?

When a chiropractor performs a spinal adjustment on a patient, he or she is applying a small but specific degree of force to one of the vertebral joints in the spine. These little adjustments are meticulously planned and controlled to deliver the desired response. That response is the improved mobility of the vertebrae and other structures in the spine. This restoration of function is also registered by the nervous system which responds and adapts accordingly.

Over time—whether due to bad posture, poor sleeping position, hours of sitting at work or a sporting injury—a person’s spine can start to lose strength, stability, and mobility. This, and the effect it can have on the nervous system, can impair the body’s ability to function correctly.. It may not be limited to discomfort and pain.

In most cases, a chiropractic adjustment will not only restore mobility to a vertebral joint , but it will often create a cavitation of gas within the joint cavity. This produces the popping sound and is simply a by product of the joint release. This releases pressure and relieves the  feeling of discomfort and pain.

What Are the Benefits of a Chiropractic Adjustment?

The benefits of chiropractic adjustment can vary depending on your injury or source of pain. For instance, if you are suffering from sciatica or some other pinched nerve issue, a spinal adjustment can release the immobilty affecting  the joint, thereby providing partial or complete pain relief. A course of chiriopractic care is usually recommended to enable lasting correction and rehabilitation.

Chiropractic management,  including treatment and advice regarding posture and exercise, has a long list of benefits including:

    • Back pain
    • Neck and shoulder pain
    • Headaches
    • Sciatica and referred pain
    • Recovery and prevention of athletic injury
    • Posture and mobility
    • Assisting in the management of scoliosis
    • Limb pain

The way these issues affect our health can vary for an individual. Be they a child, adult or elderly person.

Whether you have a serious injury or a minor issue with discomfort, a spinal adjustment can help feel better and move better. The back isn’t the only part of the body that can benefit from these treatments.

On the contrary, since the spine is linked to so many nerves, referred pain and discomfort is a common secondary symptom.  Chronic pain or discomfort virtually anywhere in the body might  be contributed to by  spinal dysfunction. In any case, it’s worth a visit to the chiropractor for assessment, appropriate advice and management.

How Often Do I Need a Chiropractic Check-up/ Adjustment?

At Yeronga Chiropractic & Wellness Centre, our first-time patients often ask us two different questions. The first is  “Is chiropractic care effective?”. The second is ‘How often do I need treatment?’

The first is fairly cut and dry – If your problem is related to the function of your spine and musculoskeletal system, then yes.

Needless to say, the second question is more complex to answer—and not just because it is an open-ended question rather than a simple yes-or-no enquiry. On the contrary, it’s difficult to say how long you should require treatment, if only because the answer will vary from person to person, and problem to problem What is required is a thorough history and examination to identify the cause and extent of your presenting complaint and, if appropriate, proceed with a trial of care to indicate whether satisfactory recovery will be achieved.

If you are seeking assistance with an injury, back pain problem or some other specific injury, you should schedule an appointment at Yeronga Chiropractic immediately. Coming into our offices sooner rather than later will help you find the pain relief you deserve and will protect your body from further damage. After your first adjustment, our chiropractor, Dr Aidan McGuigan, will advise you on what to do next.

If you wish to reap the preventative benefits of regular chiropractic adjustments—a healthier spine and nervous system, stronger protection against future injuries, better posture, greater comfort, less pain, etc.—then call us for a consultation, examination and we will discuss your options. With all patients, we work to devise an appropriate plan for appointments. In other words, we will be able to advise you on how frequently you should have spinal adjustments once you’ve had your first appointment.
