The “Crack” Sound During a Chiropractic Visit: What Is It?
One of the most common questions we hear in clinic is about the “crack” sound that commonly happens during a chiropractic adjustment. For many people, the sound can feel reassuring or satisfying, while for others it can feel a little unfamiliar. If you’ve ever wondered what actually causes that sound, you’re not alone, and it’s completely normal to ask questions about what you are feeling and hearing during treatment.
What Causes the Sound?
The sound you often hear during an adjustment is called a joint cavitation. Inside each joint is fluid that helps support smooth and comfortable movement. When a joint is gently and specifically moved during an adjustment, there can be a small change in pressure inside the joint space. This change in pressure can cause tiny gas bubbles within the joint fluid to rapidly release, which is what creates, the “crack”: or popping sound you may hear.
It is important to know that this sound is not bones cracking, bones being forced back into place, or bones rubbing together. Instead, it is simply a natural physical response that cans occur when a joint is moved in a particular way. The sound itself does not necessarily indicate how effective the adjustment was; it is just one possible outcome of the movement.
Does It Always Happen?
Not always. Some adjustments produce a sound, while others do not. The presence or absence of a “crack” does not determine whether treatment has been effective. Chiropractic care focuses on improving movement, supporting joint and muscle function, and helping you move more comfortably, rather than trying to create or chase a sound. Many people feel improved mobility, reduced stiffness, or a sense of ease whether there is a sound present or not.
Is It Safe?
When performed by a qualified chiropractor, joint cavitation is considered a normal and expected response to specific manual techniques. Before providing care, your chiropractor will always assess your individual presentation, discuss your health history, and explain the treatment approach being used; Care is tailored to each person’s body, symptoms, and comfort level. If you ever feel unsure or have questions during treatment, we encourage you to ask; understanding what is happening can help you feel more relaxed and confident in your care.
What If I Don’t Like the Sound?
That’s completely okay. Not everyone enjoys the sound of joint cavitation. There are many different chiropractic techniques available, including lower-force and gentler approaches that may not produce the same sound. Your comfort and preferences are always important, and care can be adapted to suit what feels best for you.
