Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation and injury death for older Australians. Each year, approximately one in three Australians aged 65 and over will experience a fall — and the consequences can be life-changing. While exercise and home modification are important fall-prevention strategies, chiropractic care plays an underappreciated role in reducing fall risk by improving balance, coordination, and sensorimotor function.
The relationship between the spine and balance is well established. The spine and surrounding muscles contain an enormous number of proprioceptive receptors — sensory organs that constantly communicate your body’s position in space to the brain. When spinal joints are not moving optimally, these receptors can become less accurate. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to improve proprioceptive signalling, with studies demonstrating improvements in postural stability and reaction time following treatment.
In practical terms, our senior patients frequently report improvements beyond just pain relief — better balance on uneven surfaces, increased confidence when walking, improved ability to turn their head while reversing a car, and greater ease getting up from chairs and in and out of the bath. These functional improvements directly reduce fall risk and support independent living.
Our approach to senior chiropractic care at Yeronga is gentle and age-appropriate. We use low-force techniques including drop-table adjusting and activator methods that are highly effective without the need for vigorous manipulation. We also work with patients’ GPs and other specialists to ensure a coordinated approach. If you or an older family member would benefit from a chiropractic assessment, please call us — we welcome DVA card holders, Seniors Card holders, and patients referred by their GP under a Medicare Enhanced Primary Care plan.
