Screen Time and Kids' Posture: What Parents Need to Know

A generation ago, a chiropractor treating a 10-year-old for forward head posture was unusual. Today it is increasingly common. The explosion of smartphones, tablets, and laptop use among children has created a new wave of posture-related issues — and parents are starting to notice. At Yeronga Chiropractic, we have seen a marked increase in young patients presenting with neck pain, upper back stiffness, and headaches directly linked to screen habits.

The problem is mechanical: when we look down at a screen, the effective weight of the head on the cervical spine increases dramatically. At neutral, the head weighs approximately 4-6 kg. At 15 degrees of forward flexion (a typical phone-scrolling angle), that effective load increases to up to 12 kg. For every 2.5cm the head is carried forward of the midline, the head weight load on the spine doubles. Over hours of daily exposure, this creates sustained muscle fatigue, joint compression, and gradually, structural changes to the growing spine.

Signs to watch for in your child include: rounded shoulders, chin-forward posture, frequent headaches especially at the back of the head, complaints of neck or upper back tightness, fatigue after sitting or school, and poor sleep patterns. These symptoms should not be dismissed as ‘growing pains’ — early intervention produces significantly better outcomes than waiting.

Simple strategies can help: encourage screen-free breaks every 30 minutes, position screens at eye level where possible, and promote outdoor activity and sports that strengthen the postural muscles. Chiropractic assessment can identify any structural changes early and help correct them while your child’s spine is still developing.
