Chiropractic can help with:

Neck Pain

Neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, headaches and migraines are some of the more common reasons people visit a chiropractor. It can range from intermittent, mild discomfort to severe, constant pain leading to long term effects on quality of life and time off work. Your South Brisbane Chiropractor has been helping neck pain and headache sufferers since 1997.

It can begin from a sudden injury such as a whiplash, a fall, a heavy lift or a knock to the head or a more gradual onset from something such as poor posture at the computer, text neck, sleeping awkwardly, or stress. Whether it be traumatic, gradual, or a bit of both, the underlying outcome can be similar.

With consideration to varying levels of injury, what is often occurring is a mechanical fault affecting the joints of the neck, muscle pain and spasm, inflammation (to varying degrees), and nerve irritation. Other structures that can be involved are the discs, ligaments and surrounding tissue. All contribute to a painful, stiff neck.

  • Acute neck pain

This can be very sharp and catchy. It can result from injury or manifest from a longer standing problem. If pain is severe or persists for more than a couple of days, it is recommended to seek advice.  Your chiropractic treatment will assist in rapid pain relief and a return to better movement. Appropriate home advice such as ice, heat, exercises, and medication (if necessary) will be given.

  • Chronic Pain

This pain can last for months to years. It can affect the overall function of the sufferer and lead to long term debility and other health complications.  Long-term use of pain medication usually does not improve functioning for patients with chronic neck pain. Chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy and exercise advice can prove more beneficial.

  • Many neck pain sufferers will experience:

    • Muscle spasms
    • Fatigue
    • Stress
    • Neck stiffness
    • Pain in the upper-back
    • Pain in the shoulders
    • Pain or changes in sensation in the arms/hands
    • Sensitivity of neck to touch and pressure
    • Headaches

What To Do When Your Neck is In Pain

Chiropractic care can be very effective for neck pain, shoulder and upper back pain, headaches and migraines.

Current research indicates that chiropractic care is low risk and effective for neck pain, and suggests that for long term improvement of neck pain and headaches, it is more effective than pain medication and with less adverse side effects.

Seek Help When:

  1. Your pain or discomfort lasts for more than 2-3 days
  2. Your pain refers or radiates elsewhere
  3. You have recurring pain and/or stiffness
  4. You have postural issues (aka sway back, lordosis, pelvic rotation)
  • Subluxation/ Joint Dysfunction/ Wry neck/ Muscle Spasm:

There is an intimate link between the neck and upper back joints, the nervous system and their supporting soft tissues. A joint that becomes locked up or injured can become inflamed and significantly painful; so too can the nerves, discs and supporting muscles and ligaments. A joint suffering from poor function will often accompany spinal injuries and contribute to the conditions discussed in this section. At Yeronga Chiropractic, this is our bread and butter!

  • Chiropractic for Disc Pain/Slipped Disc/Bulging Disc:

Discs are very strong structures – they put up with repetitive loading, twisting, stretching and impact. Without significant trauma they don’t spontaneously bulge, herniate or rupture. Repetitive micro trauma (tears) to the disc fibres can eventually lead to it bulging or herniating triggering pain locally and, if a spinal nerve becomes irritated, the pain may radiate or refer to another area of your body. Your chiropractor is experienced with disc pain and utilises effective and appropriate techniques to assist relief and restore function.

  • Sprains and Strains:

Generally understood to be reserved for sports people and manual labourers, these are also common for the weekend warriors who often follow long periods of sedentary work with fairly intensive exercise or work around the house. Typically soft tissue injuries respond well to rest, stretching, and therapies such as massage and physiotherapy. Chiropractic care can be very beneficial if there is an associated or underlying mechanical (joint) problem, assisting the return of normal muscle function and recovery. At Yeronga Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, we also utilise exercise advice, soft tissue techniques, massage and acupuncture to assist with your full recovery.

  • Stress and Neck Pain:

Unless severe or long term, stress alone doesn’t usually cause back pain, but it can aggravate your weak points. Stress causes our blood pressure and heart rate to increase. Stress hormones tighten our muscles. Under prolonged stress, the chronic tension leads to muscle fatigue, pain and trigger points. Many of our patients will note that, as a result of chiropractic care, they feel more relaxed, move better, and cope better with stress. We are also happy to discuss appropriate stress management strategies and relaxation techniques during your time with us.

Feeling the pinch?

Exercise, posture, mobility, regular breaks from sitting and good nutrition is very important in maintaining good spinal health. So too is appropriate treatment and check-ups.

Ignoring or masking pain is not only risky to your health but can be very expensive in the long run.

Yeronga Chiropractic provides expert and thorough examination and management for headaches, migraines, shoulder and arm pain, disc pain (“slipped” disc, herniated disc, and bulging disc), arthritis, repetitive strain injuries, scoliosis, acute and chronic pain. Massage, exercise prescription, ergonomic advice and referral to other modalities for investigation or treatment will be discussed when appropriate. Our patients enjoy high satisfaction levels in not just relief from pain, but better function as well.
